Dad’s Diary May 2009

Friday, 1st May 2009

Weather good.  The carpet man came down to lay the carpets down the stairs and in the hallway, nice work and it looks good too.  Went up the town to buy some ham and rolls of bread, also some pickled onions and some lettuce – it all went down to a good lunch – and to round it off a nice cup of tea.  Bought my Angling Times which I have every month.  I will read it later on in the evening.

Saturday, 2nd May 2009

The opening day of the flat racing begins with the Newmarket meeting 2000 GNS.  I backed a horse called Master Craftsman, he ran well but I think he needs 1 ½ miles on the mile, 2000 GNS was too short, also the going was too firm.  DI has nearly finished the last room now and the carpet man will be back to finish too on Tuesday.

 Sunday, 3rd May 2009

Went and placed some flowers on V’s grave.  The weather is sunny and dry at this moment in time.   The second day of the Newmark meeting with the 1000GNS mile.  This is for 3yold FILLIES, it was won by a 20-1 outsider GHANAATI trained by Barry Hills and ridden by one of his sons and I backed it, more luck than judgement I should say.

Monday, 4th May 2009

Weather not too bad.  DI has nearly finished the last room now, corn beef sandwiches today with salad, lettuce, radishes, nice.  Not a lot of shops open today as it’s a bank holiday.  Didn’t get my usual things.  DI had to buy more paint, I think this should bet the last tin of paint before completion.  Telly has gone on the blink, will have to phone up Daniels and ask them to have a look at it.

Tuesday, 5th May 2009

Weather fine.  DI cut the lawns back and front.  The carpet man came down to fit the flooring in the kitchen they did a good job and they were not long in completing it.  They will be coming back on Thursday to fit the carpet in the main rooms and the dining room.  I, myself, went all round the lawns with my strimmer then I will rake up the loose grass tomorrow.

Wednesday, 6th May 2009

I rang up Daniels about the telly as it was breaking up, the picture and the sound, they said they would send a man down to look at it.  The man came in the morning about dinner time.  I explained the situation to him, he then had a look at the telly, pushed a few buttons and said it should be ok.  Now sorted!

Thursday, 7th May 2009

Weather good.  Work on the house is still being done, painting.   Still cannot find our Kt’s latest address, will have to write to her son, B, as I have his address then he can write back to me and let me have his mother’s address.

Friday, 8th May 2009

Weather not too bad, still that cold wind about.  The carpet man came to lay and measure the carpet also the kitchen flooring will be done too.  While this is being done, I went shopping, I was thinking I would be better out of the way, then when I get back it will be all finished.

Saturday, 9th May 2009

R and Rs came down. They said how nice it all looked.  I did a puzzle with Rs but she was faster than me at putting it all together.  I watched the races form Ascot, not a lot of luck I am afraid.  R cleaned out all the kitchen cupboards of the old pots and cooking things I use.  She helped me sort them out.

Monday, 11th May 2009

Weather good!  DI finished his work on the house.  He will take the odds and sods away in his van later.  He left at dinner time today after we moved things around and sorted things out such as hanging pictures, stacking books, lots of things to do and it all takes time.

Tuesday, 12th May 2009

Weather good.  I forgot to pay the Council Tax so I will pay it tomorrow as it was too late in the day when I remembered it, it wasn’t in the diary, 2009, when I looked.  I am now getting or nearly getting back to where I was before I had the house redecorated and new carpets laid.  I have been up to the garden centre at Whitminster, I thought ‘sod this’ I’m going out.  I left about 11:15 called in the Old Forge, 12:15, had a Henry.  The landlord said, “that went down well, didn’t it?”  I said, “yes, next time I’ll have a bigger glass!”

Went into the centre, had a look round, bought some flower seeds then left around 12:55, had a nice cup of tea after a shower.

Wednesday, 13th May 2009

Weather lousy, dull and grey.  Good job it’s not Friday as I don’t think I would be backing any horses at York this time.  I had a winner at 5-1, the other two are still running!

Saturday, 16th May 2009

Weather grey skies about, rain forecast.   Went down to arrange V’s grave, cleared the old flowers and replaced them with new ones, cut the grass around the edges as best I could as the grass was wet with the latest rainfall.  The lawns will have to wait until we have some dry weather.

Monday, 18th May 2009

Weather raining on and off, windy.  Went up to Stonehouse to get a card for our R’s anniversary.  Posted it, maybe it will get there on time, maybe not!  Anyway will ring tomorrow.  Got back had my dinner, Cornish pasty with soup, nice.  I am going to have that fish that we, DI and I, got from Tescos after we had been to GRH to have my eye test, I have to go to TETBURY on the 26th to have the operation.

Tuesday, 19th May 2009

Weather nice this morning but changed later on to rain.  DI came down to give me some photos of the family, they are on the shelves, looks better when they are covered with pictures.   Anyway, DK came from work to collect the phone number to cancel my appointment with the ear people as I will be having my eye treatment on the same day.

 Wednesday, 20th May 2009

Weather, skies clear at times then cloudy, mild, rain expected later.  Went shopping bought some pigs livers will have later and sausages for tea.  Worked on the garden with the strimmer.  Not much grass around the edges of the garden.  DI came down to mow the lawns, it looks a lot better now that two people have worked on it.

Thursday, 21st May 2009

Weather dry with sunny spells.  Not much doing today.   Went up the town had a look around the charity shop, sometimes you can pick up a bargain but this time I was out of luck.  Came back, made dinner, sausages and mashed potatoes with sweetcorn.  Went down well.

Friday, 22nd May 2009

Weather still dry but not very special.  Payday today, good job too, paid the electricity bill and the council tax.  Good job it’s not every week or I would be in real trouble trying to keep a check on things.

Saturday, 23rd May 2009

Weather rain at times, cloudy.  Racing today here and in Scotland.  Backed RIP-VAN-WINKLE at 10-1 he has now come down to 6-1 on the Derby day he may be a shorter price.  Not much back with the rest just one winner.  DI came down.

Sunday, 24th May 2009

Weather good at last, the best day this week.  Went up to our DK’s as he rang me and asked if I would like to go for dinner.  We both sat in the garden and had a nice meal listening to the radio.  I watched the birds in the garden as they came right up to you looking for scraps from the table.  DK said that there is a blackbird who comes around regularly.  All in all, a nice day!

Monday, 25th May 2009

Weather dull but mild.  Will have to go and collect my modest winnings.

Tuesday, 26th May 2009

Appointment at Tetbury hospital for eye operation 10 am.  DI dropped me off at the hospital about 9:30, had the operation and left about 1:00, arrived home 1.30.  Weather was cloudy in the morning then changed to sunny spells.  My eye is not paining in any way, it’s still a bit runny and the sight is cloudy.

Wednesday, 27th May 2009

Weather cloudy with rain.  My eye is getting clearer now will take more time to heal properly, after treatment, with drops, 4 a day now.  The kids rang me to see how my eye was progressing.  I feel sorry for DK as his eyes are not good, he said that the doctor wishes him to see a specialist.

Thursday, 28th May 2009

Weather mild with sunny spells.  I have to keep putting drops in my eye 9 times a day, it’s a fiddling job but it has to be done.  DI & Vr came down, Vr to look at the house and DI to mow the lawns.  Vr helped me with my eye drops.

Friday 29th May 2009

Weather lovely and mild and sunny, slight breeze.  DK came down around 2.30, we went with K’s dog down to the Ship Inn at Saul.  We had a cream tea then went for a stroll along the small stream that leads to the banks of the river Severn.  Came back to the pub, had a couple of drinks, DK had a Henry, then we came home.
